The deep, harsh orange of a sunset, reflecting intensely off the ocean, heralds the Gommage. The citizens of Lumiere gather silently at the harbor. Festive banners and rose-petal necklaces offer a stark contrast to the oppressive stillness; not a sound is heard as every eye fixes on the horizon, where the monolith awaits the impending event. A thousand miles distant, a massive monolith pierces the clouds, its once-golden energy now faded. Kept by the Paintress.
For seventy years, the Gommage has occurred: people vanish into thin air, their absorbed energy recharging the monolith’s glow for another year.
Everyone holds their breath, a silent plea hanging in the air that they, or their loved ones, will not be the ones chosen this time, and those who remain have to decide whether to take the Last Expedition in order to stop it.
